Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they are improving or imploding.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Presence

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to remain there temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Uncovering His True Position

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
