Approximately fifty automobiles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a statement.

Law enforcement report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then located multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably blood from a person.

"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.

City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
